Prenatal vitamins are a must during pregnancy. But how do you know which prenatal vitamins are the best for you?

Taking prenatal vitamins during pregnancy is pretty standard. Your OB always makes sure you’re taking them. Prenatal vitamins provide essential nutrients for both you and baby. But how do you know which prenatal vitamins are the best for your body?

It all varies on the form, ingredients and price. Some women may prefer pills over gummies. Maybe vegan-friendly or non-GMO supplements are a must for you. Gluten-free? Don’t worry! There’s plenty of prenatal vitamins that are gluten-free. The price could determine what kind of vitamins you need. Check out the amazon finds below to see if they’re best for you!

Form

Prenatal vitamins come in pills, gummies, and even powder. Big pills freak me out and I just can’t swallow them. So prenatal gummies were the way to go for me! Many brands now offer gummies. It makes taking them a little more fun since they actually taste good. Powder might work well if you like to make a daily smoothie. Pills are quick and easy!

Ingredients

There are so many companies that make prenatal vitamins. Make sure you are choosing a brand that uses quality and tested ingredients.

Always double-check the brand with your OB. Choose a brand that contains DHA, folic acid (folate) and iron. “DHA is essential for the growth and functional development of the brain in infants.” Iron helps produce blood in your body which then supplies oxygen to your baby. Mayo Clinic states, ”Folic acid can help prevent neural tube defects.” This can help decrease the risk of serious birth defects.

Did you know: Prenatal vitamins are not required to be FDA regulated.

Price

Most are reasonably priced. There are some brands that tend to be more expensive. Just because they are expensive doesn’t always mean they’re the best so make sure you thoroughly check them out.

Did you know: Many brands are HSA/FSA eligible. You can also get prenatal vitamins through your OB so you may not even have to pay a co-pay depending on your insurance company.

Before, during and after

You can take prenatal vitamins before you become pregnant if you plan on trying to conceive. You are also supposed to continue taking them after pregnancy if you are breastfeeding. Taking prenatal vitamins after birth can help with calcium intake and prevent anemia. You can also switch to postnatal vitamins after birth for your postpartum journey.
